Presidents Report

Summer 2009 - Presidents’ Message

Hello players, parents, grand parents and many friends of ND Hockey. Welcome to the 2009-2010 ice hockey season in North Delta.

I would like to thank everyone who attended the AGM back on May 12 and thank you for electing myself as your association president for the next two years.   I am looking forward to working with the Executive and Board members in conducting the business of our association.

This season, in particular, will be both exciting and a challenging one.   The Winter Olympics will stretch all of the resources in the lower mainland and our own community as teams prepare for and then participate in their chosen events.   I expect some disruption in our access and use of Sungod, North Delta Recreation Centre and Tilbury Ice.    Both BC Hockey and Pacific Coast have been working with the Olympic committees to try and resolve possible problems.   I would ask for your patience during the Olympics, February 12 – 28, 2010 and the Paralympics March 12 – 21, 2010.

In preparation for the 2009 – 2010 hockey season, Pacific Coast Hockey has reconfigured the schedules for this season ONLY.   North Delta will be holding tryouts two weeks earlier this year.   The rep tryouts will begin on Monday, August 17.    The recreation hockey players will begin their season on August 24.   Our Ice Allocator, Leo Sweeney has been working diligently to ensure that we are able to meet the new schedule and has already booked the ice and arranged for the schedule to be posted on our website.   Please confirm your times on the website at http://www.ndhockey.com.

The Rep Coach selection process has begun and continues under the supervision of Blair Beaton our 1st Vice President as I prepare this report.   There have been many interviews of candidates for head coach positions and there will be announcements on our website as appointments are approved.

Elvio Taddei our 2nd Vice President has been busy also, getting his team of league managers in place.   I would expect there will be an announcement during the week of July 8 of the people who have been appointed to coordinate our Recreation Hockey programme.

Other members of your executive are working quietly and diligently behind the scenes: Pam Beaton is busy processing the player registrations with our Office Manager, Ann Philp creating the huge deposit slips for the trip to the credit union; Deanna Bulycz our Hockey Auxiliary Chair has worked with Dan & Lila deBruin who have put the ND Hockey Family Day parade together – thanks to Dan & Lila and all the volunteers who assisted in the decorating of the float.   Our neatly decorated semi-trailer float donated by Jimmie Galbraith won 2nd prize.   ND Hockey players from Atom, PeeWee, Bantam and Midget handed out invitation flyers about our ND Hockey programme to the numerous young children who lined the route to ND Park; Anita Cairney and Melissa Mulcahy have been busy updating the Policy & Procedures manual and maintaining and updating our website; our equipment manager, Joe Tallarico has been busy working at Sungod getting the Jersey’s and sock’s ready for the early start of this years season.

Our treasurer, Jagrup Bains just completed the application for Direct Draw Funding with the BC Gaming Branch.   This was a huge undertaking requiring many hours of preparation.

Bob Atchison was recently appointed our Referee-In-Chief for the upcoming season.   He has already made plans to work with Troy Westlake the RIC for South Delta in the development of our officials in Delta. This is wonderful news and will be a great benefit to all.

Past President David Paterson continues to bring me up to date on the inner workings of our great board and executive which is much appreciated.

We are always looking for more volunteers to assist your association.   Currently we are looking for two volunteers to fill the following Executive positions (until the next AGM): Head Coach / Coach Coordinator and a Risk Manager.   In addition I am looking for other volunteers to assist in all aspects of our programme.   Please contact me if you can assist – president@ndhockey.com and we could discuss over a coffee.

I am looking forward to see you all at the rink,

George
